Key takeaways
Looking for the best Christmas markets in Europe in 2026? The right choice depends on when you can travel as much as which city looks best in photographs. Some famous markets close by Christmas Eve, while others are still trading in January.
This guide compares twelve named markets, not just twelve cities. Dates and opening hours are taken from official organisers, local governments or official tourism sites and were checked on 11 October 2026. Where those sources conflict or have not published an exception, we say so.
Best Christmas markets in Europe 2026: quick comparison

The dates above describe the named market. An entire city's lights, skating or winter festival may continue after individual craft stalls close. In Strasbourg, only the 2026 opening date is currently confirmed by the current official homepage.
Which Christmas market should you choose?
- For traditional crafts and food: Nuremberg or Dresden, preferably before Christmas Eve.
- For a photogenic, smaller old town: Colmar, or Strasbourg combined with Colmar once Strasbourg's final calendar is confirmed.
- For a market and a proper city break: Vienna, Budapest or Prague.
- For children and rides: Copenhagen's Tivoli is strong, but ticketed; Nuremberg also has its separately dated children's market.
- For a trip after Christmas: Prague, Salzburg, Brussels, Tallinn or a specifically open secondary market such as Vienna Schönbrunn.
The 12 markets worth considering for 2026
Vienna: Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt
Best for: A classic big-city market. 2026/27 dates: 13 Nov–26 Dec.
We like Vienna for the theatrical City Hall backdrop and the Heart Tree, a recognisable landmark among the market's decorations. We'd make Rathausplatz an evening stop, then give Schönbrunn a separate visit rather than spend the whole break at one market. The attraction for us is the variety of settings, not ticking off every stall.
- Normal hours: Daily 10:00–22:00.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec: 10:00–18:30; open 25–26 Dec, with the market ending on 26 Dec.
- Planning caveat: Do not confuse the market with the neighbouring Ice Dream: skating continues into January, but the Rathausplatz stalls end on 26 December.
Best time to go
Choose a midweek evening before 24 December if you want the illuminated Rathaus backdrop and time for a leisurely visit. For an early-November visit or January dates, choose Schönbrunn instead.
Nuremberg: Christkindlesmarkt at Hauptmarkt
Best for: Traditional German Christmas crafts. 2026/27 dates: 27 Nov–24 Dec.
We'd choose Nuremberg for regional crafts with a story. Its Zwetschgenmännle are tiny souvenir figures assembled from dried prunes, figs and walnuts around a wire frame. They look edible but are ornaments. We like that sort of local oddity more than another generic Christmas gift, so we'd go looking for the prune figures and leave time for Franconian food.
- Normal hours: Daily 10:00–21:00.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec: 10:00–14:00; main market closes for the season after that.
- Planning caveat: The separate Kinderweihnacht runs later than the main market, until 30 December, but closes on Christmas Day. Check it separately if travelling with children after 24 December.
Plan around the closing day
This is not the one to book for 26–29 December if your priority is the Hauptmarkt itself. Traditional gifts and food are the reason to go, so put the market at the centre of a November or early-December trip.

Strasbourg: Historic-centre Christmas markets
Best for: Alsatian streets and a multi-market walk. 2026/27 dates: from 27 Nov; closing date unconfirmed.
We like Strasbourg most when the walk goes beyond the cathedral. At Place Grimmeissen, the Marché OFF swaps conventional chalets for colourful shipping containers and focuses on second-hand goods, local makers and responsible shopping. We'd put that contrast at the centre of the trip: historic squares for the setting, then the OFF market for a different idea of Christmas shopping.
- Normal hours: The city's general FAQ currently gives daily chalet hours of 11:30–21:00, with opening day from 14:00; this isn't yet a complete confirmed 2026 schedule.
- Exceptions: The FAQ says chalets close at 18:00 on 24 Dec; the full 2026 closing date and any 25–27 Dec trading remain unconfirmed.
- Planning caveat: The official 2026 homepage confirms the opening date, but subsidiary city pages still carry 2025 or older calendars. Do not book a post-Christmas market trip here on that evidence.
Consider two Alsatian towns
You can combine Strasbourg with Colmar by train. The trip works best when both published calendars overlap. Strasbourg's final 2026 closing date needs confirmation before booking Christmas-week dates.

Colmar: Six central Christmas markets
Best for: A smaller, walkable Alsatian escape. 2026/27 dates: 23 Nov–29 Dec.
We like Colmar for a slower, romantic break, especially when there's something to do beyond admiring the half-timbered streets. Children's choirs sing carols from illuminated boats in Petite Venise: the 2026 programme runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 17:00-18:00, from 25 November to 19 December. We'd build an Advent evening around that, then browse the markets at an unhurried pace.
- Normal hours: Mon–Thu 11:00–19:00; Fri–Sun 10:00–20:00.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec: 11:00–17:00; 25–26 Dec: 10:00–20:00 according to the central market schedule.
- Planning caveat: Some individual listing pages disagree with the central schedule on the opening hour on 26 December. Arrive after 11:00 if that exact morning matters; the gourmet market runs later than the central six.
A good two-night rhythm
Use your first evening for the illuminated historic streets, and return the next morning for crafts and food. Colmar is easier to savour slowly than as a rushed stop between many cities.
Cologne: Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral
Best for: An early-start German city break. 2026/27 dates: 16 Nov–23 Dec.
We like Cologne as a two-part market break: the Cathedral for its backdrop, then Heinzels for skating and a story. Its little elves come from a legend in which they secretly finished craftsmen's work overnight, until a tailor's wife discovered them. We'd choose that mix of architecture and playful detail over spending every evening around the same square.
- Normal hours: Sun–Wed 11:00–21:00; Thu–Fri 11:00–22:00; Sat 10:00–22:00.
- Exceptions: Closed on Sunday 22 Nov (Totensonntag); closes for the season on 23 Dec.
- Planning caveat: If visiting after Christmas, this particular market is shut. Heinzels Wintermärchen at Heumarkt is a different market and continues into January.
Check which Cologne market
The Cathedral market and Heumarkt market operate on separate schedules. For a trip after 25 December, Heumarkt is the more relevant market, not a reason to assume the Cathedral stalls are still running.
Prague: Old Town Square Christmas Market
Best for: A lively historic square over New Year. 2026/27 dates: 28 Nov–6 Jan 2027.
We'd choose Prague for the setting and a longer winter city break. Old Town Square already has a small theatrical spectacle of its own: twelve apostles appear on the astronomical clock each hour. We like a market visit that sits inside a worthwhile day of exploring, so we'd make time for the clock and old streets rather than turn the whole trip into souvenir shopping.
- Normal hours: The exact 2026 Old Town daily hours and Christmas Eve exceptions should be reconfirmed. Nearby Wenceslas Square's separately listed market is scheduled 10:00–22:00.
- Exceptions: Old Town Square is scheduled through 6 Jan; special 24–26 Dec and 31 Dec trading hours are not yet confirmed for 2026.
- Planning caveat: Small Prague markets have different seasons: náměstí Míru and Náměstí Republiky end on 24 December, so do not assume every stall in the city remains open in January.
Stay past Christmas
Prague is one of the few classic old-town choices where the headline market is scheduled into January. Exact holiday hours still need checking, and smaller markets can finish on Christmas Eve.
Budapest: Advent Basilica at Szent István Square
Best for: Market evenings plus thermal baths. 2026/27 dates: 13 Nov–1 Jan 2027.
We like Budapest when the market is the evening highlight rather than the entire itinerary. At Advent Basilica, the façade becomes the canvas for light painting from 17:30 each afternoon in the 2026 programme. We'd plan a city or thermal-bath day, arrive for the lights, then choose a sit-down dinner elsewhere. That gives the break more variety than eating every meal at a stall.
- Normal hours: Mon–Thu and Sun 11:00–22:00; Fri–Sat 11:00–23:00.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec 11:00–15:00; 25–26 Dec 11:00–20:00; 31 Dec 11:00–03:00 next day; 1 Jan 11:00–18:00.
- Planning caveat: Advent Basilica and Vörösmarty Square are separate markets. When planning craft shopping after 28 December, confirm which exhibitors remain, rather than relying on festival end dates.
Markets and non-market days
Budapest's advantage is that a thermal-bath or museum afternoon is attractive even when the weather is poor. Look at market closing times on 24 December if your arrival is late.

Brussels: Winter Wonders Christmas Market
Best for: A rail-friendly winter festival. 2026/27 dates: 27 Nov–3 Jan 2027.
We like Brussels for a winter festival rather than one enclosed shopping market. The Grand-Place becomes part of the entertainment through its sound-and-light show, while Winter Wonders spreads into other central squares. We'd put the architecture and evening lights first, with food and chalets along the way. For us, that makes a more interesting short break than counting stalls.
- Normal hours: Daily 12:00–22:00.
- Exceptions: 24 and 31 Dec close at 18:00. The organiser also lists an 18:00 close on 3 January; recheck final-day hours.
- Planning caveat: The Brussels city authority confirms the winter festival and its market as part of the same 2026 date range; individual attractions can have separate times.
Use the centre on foot
The compact central layout makes it possible to explore markets, the Grand-Place and other winter attractions in one break. Consider train travel when comparing this trip from London.
Salzburg: Christkindlmarkt at Domplatz and Residenzplatz
Best for: Alpine traditions and music. 2026/27 dates: 19 Nov–1 Jan 2027.
We'd choose Salzburg for musical traditions as much as shopping. Its tower-playing custom began in 1952: brass players send Christmas music across Residenzplatz from three towers. The 2026 Thursday and Saturday performances run at 18:30 through 19 December. We like a trip with a performance at its centre, so we'd choose a date for the music rather than simply the longest list of stalls.
- Normal hours: Mon–Thu 10:00–20:30; Fri 10:00–21:00; Sat 09:00–21:00; Sun/holidays 09:00–20:30.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec 09:00–15:00; 25–26 Dec 11:00–18:00; 31 Dec retail until at least 18:00, selected catering until 01:00; 1 Jan 11:00–18:00.
- Planning caveat: Salzburg's December programme includes traditional events such as Krampus and Perchten processions. Check the official programme before scheduling a trip around any one event.
Go for the programme
Check choir schedules and Salzburg's local Advent traditions rather than treating the market as only a place to buy souvenirs. On New Year's Eve, most retail stalls finish earlier than selected food outlets.

Tallinn: Town Hall Square Christmas Market
Best for: A medieval old town. 2026/27 dates: 20 Nov–6 Jan 2027.
We like Tallinn for the old town as a whole, not a marathon of market shopping. The city's tourism authority traces the Town Hall Square tree tradition to 1441 and the Brotherhood of the Blackheads. That story gives the central tree more meaning than another festive photo stop. We'd allow time for medieval streets and warm indoor breaks, with the market as the evening centrepiece.
- Normal hours: Stalls daily 10:00–20:00; hot drinks until 22:00, or 23:00 Fri–Sat.
- Exceptions: The organiser lists daily trading across the festive season and New Year; no separate Christmas Day closure is published.
- Planning caveat: The 2026 organiser page also lists a daily Santa house from the first Sunday of Advent. Cold weather is likely but a snowy market cannot be promised.
A colder-weather decision
Pick Tallinn if medieval streets, local design and winter food matter more than guaranteed snowfall. Bring proper layers: spending an evening outside feels different here than in a milder Central European city.
Dresden: Striezelmarkt at Altmarkt
Best for: Stollen and Saxon crafts. 2026/27 dates: 25 Nov–24 Dec.
We'd choose Dresden for Saxon Christmas traditions and distinctive craftsmanship. The Striezelmarkt's signature tiered Christmas pyramid is 14.61 metres tall, turning a familiar wooden decoration into a landmark. We like that connection between the large display and the crafts sold below it. We'd make stollen and woodwork the focus of the visit, rather than expect the market to carry on after Christmas Eve.
- Normal hours: Opening day 25 Nov 16:00–21:00; 26 Nov–23 Dec daily 10:00–21:00.
- Exceptions: 24 Dec 10:00–14:00; main Striezelmarkt closes for the season afterwards.
- Planning caveat: The market's own homepage still displays an outdated opening-day line. For 2026, use Dresden's updated event calendar for 25 November and 16:00 opening.
Focus on Advent, not Boxing Day
The Striezelmarkt closes at 14:00 on Christmas Eve. December craft displays and stollen are the point of the visit; another destination is better for a post-Christmas market trip.
Copenhagen: Christmas in Tivoli Gardens
Best for: Families, rides and festive entertainment. 2026/27 dates: 13 Nov–3 Jan 2027.
We like Tivoli for people who want a Christmas outing with entertainment, not just shopping. The gardens opened in 1843, long before the modern festive season became an attraction of its own. We'd choose the lights, rides and historic park setting for a family evening, while someone mainly interested in craft shopping would be better served by a traditional public-square market.
- Normal hours: Exact hours depend on the Tivoli day calendar and attraction; not asserted as a single market-wide daily schedule.
- Exceptions: Individual date closures, including 24 Dec, and ride/stall hours require a final check on Tivoli's own daily calendar.
- Planning caveat: Budget for garden admission, and check whether the rides you want are covered by a separate ticket. Do not plan a Christmas Eve visit without checking the official date calendar.
Expect a ticketed outing
Plan Tivoli as a dedicated attraction rather than as a quick free market stop. The rides, shows and opening calendar matter as much as the stalls, especially for families.

When are European Christmas markets open?
Early November: fewer choices
Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace market is scheduled from 6 November, whereas Rathausplatz and Budapest's Advent Basilica start 13 November. Many large German markets do not begin until later in the month. If you can only travel in the first week of November, check the individual market rather than assuming the city has opened for the season.

Late November and the first half of December
This is when the greatest number of markets on our shortlist overlap. It is the most flexible window for a two- or three-night city break. For a less rushed itinerary, allow a second market visit rather than relying entirely on your arrival evening. We have not measured crowd levels by day.

A market shown as open on a holiday does not guarantee every craftsperson, food vendor or attraction will trade. Tivoli's holiday-specific calendar is not represented above until the 2026 day-by-day opening has been checked.
Christmas markets open after Christmas
For a trip from 26 December into January, focus on specific surviving markets. Vienna Schönbrunn lasts to 6 January, Cologne Heumarkt to 10 January, and Prague's main squares to 6 January. Salzburg, Tallinn, Brussels and Budapest also have published post-Christmas seasons. Nuremberg Hauptmarkt and Dresden Striezelmarkt do not.
Travelling from the UK: what to compare
Before choosing a city, compare the whole trip rather than a headline flight fare. Check return flights or rail, hotel availability within walking distance or a straightforward tram ride, airport transfers and how much usable market time your arrival and departure flights leave.
Brussels is worth comparing by Eurostar and onward rail as well as air. Strasbourg and Colmar are well suited to a combined rail itinerary. For other city pairs, avoid booking a multi-city Christmas-market break until you have confirmed actual timetables and accommodation costs.
December is cold across much of this shortlist, and snow is never guaranteed. Choose a winter city break because you like its streets and food, not because an online photograph shows perfect snowfall.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best traditional Christmas market in Europe?
Nuremberg is a strong choice for a classic German market, with gingerbread, regional food and handmade decorations. Dresden is particularly good for Saxon stollen and Erzgebirge crafts. Both main markets finish on Christmas Eve.
Which markets open in early November 2026?
Vienna Schönbrunn opens on 6 November; Vienna Rathausplatz, Budapest Advent Basilica and Copenhagen Tivoli start on 13 November. Their market formats, admission rules and season end dates differ.
Can I visit a Christmas market on 25 December?
Yes, some markets have published Christmas Day hours, including Vienna Rathausplatz, Vienna Schönbrunn, Salzburg, Colmar and Budapest Advent Basilica. Nuremberg Hauptmarkt, Dresden Striezelmarkt and Cologne Cathedral will already have finished. Always check the named venue, not merely the city's tourism calendar.
Which Christmas markets last until January 2027?
Among the verified options are Prague Old Town Square, Vienna Schönbrunn, Tallinn Town Hall Square, Brussels Winter Wonders, Copenhagen Tivoli and Cologne Heumarkt. Salzburg and Budapest Advent Basilica finish on 1 January. Daily opening exceptions can still apply.
Are Christmas markets free?
Many traditional market squares are free to enter, but food, shopping and activities cost extra. Copenhagen's Tivoli is a ticketed attraction, so price it differently from a free public square. Check the organiser for current admission and ride costs.
How this guide was researched
Dates and published hours were checked on 11 October 2026 against the linked official organiser, local-government or official tourism pages. The exact named market is the unit of comparison; festival end dates have not been substituted for market dates. Prague's holiday hours, Strasbourg's final 2026 closing schedule and Tivoli's daily holiday schedule remain outstanding. This is a planning guide, not an inventory guarantee.
Choose the right destination and travel dates
